Cairo-Dock Theme for Ubuntu

About Cairo Dock:

Cairo-Dock is an animated application launch bar for the desktop, comparable to the dock in Mac OS X or Rocket Dock (for Windows). Now, you can use Cairo-Dock with OpenGL (to use your graphic card!). Some screenshots

It is compatible with Compiz-Fusion, Beryl, Compiz and Xcompmgr, but it can also run without a composite manager (using fake transparency). Cairo-Dock can run under GNOME, KDE and XFCE.

Installation
These Commands will be typed in the terminal

This is only for Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) 32/64bit, Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) 32/64bit and Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) 32/64bit.

To add the Cairo-Dock repository to your sources open the sources.list file:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and add the appropriate repository to the end of the file:

deb http://repository.cairo-dock.org/ubuntu jaunty cairo-dock # For Ubuntu 9.04

deb http://repository.cairo-dock.org/ubuntu intrepid cairo-dock # For Ubuntu 8.10

deb http://repository.cairo-dock.org/ubuntu hardy cairo-dock # For ubuntu 8.04

The signed GPG key for identification of the repository is:

wget -q http://repository.cairo-dock.org/cairo-dock.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Then, to install Cairo-Dock, issue these two commands in the terminal:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins

Note: if you get the error "E: Couldn't find package cairo-dock-plug-ins" try the code below as it seems there has been a name change and the package is now called cairo-dock-plugins in intrepid.

sudo apt-get install cairo-dock-plugins

There are no repositories available for releases older than Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron). So, if you want Cairo-Dock for an older release, you must compile it or download the package.

How to run Cairo Dock:

Go to Application->System Tools->Cairo dock(with no open GL)/cairo dock (with Open Gl)

Why Ubuntu ?

Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more.

Quick and easy updates

System requirements

Ubuntu is available for PC, 64-Bit PC and Intel-based Mac architectures. At least 256 MB of RAM is required to run the alternate install CD (384MB of RAM is required to use the live CD based installer). Install requires at least 4 GB of disk space.

Many Windows Software and games work with wine which is free and you can easily install.

There are many Graphical Enhancements as well. Try the windows+tab, windows+e, alt+tab, alt+shift+up keys and you will notice.

Very easy to install software just go System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager enter your password and then in the text box type any thing you want to search and most probably be there click it press apply and it will be installed.

You can also install any software by typing commands in the terminal.

Suppose you want to install vlc through terminal just type the following command in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install vlc
press enter and you are done.

Auto Login + Lock Screen in Ubuntu

First create (as root) the script /usr/bin/gnome-locked-session with the following content:
#!/bin/bash
beryl-manager
gnome-screensaver
gnome-screensaver-command --lock
exec gnome-session

(beryl-manager seems to have to be started before gnome-screensaver as if I start it normally it makes things buggy, like masking the screensaver or so)

Then give it execution rights: sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/gnome-locked-session

now create (still as root) the file /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-locked.desktop with the following content:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=GNOME (locked)
Name[fr]=GNOME (verrouillé)
Comment=This session logs you into GNOME and locks the screen immediately
Comment[fr]=Cette session vous connectera dans GNOME et verrouillera l'écran immédiatement
Exec=/usr/bin/gnome-locked-session
# no icon yet, only the top three are currently used
Icon=
Type=Application

Then if it is not already done, configure the auto-login.

Logoff (well... read the rest before ;-)). At the logon, click "Session" or so (maybe in an "Options" menu) and choose "GNOME (locked)". Login and select "Define as the default session". That's it ! Your session should now start locked, as every time you'll restart your computer :-)

Further if you want to login without locking the screen (for example if you logged off to allow another user to login, then want to login again), you may choose the session "GNOME" at the login screen, then login. Just don't define it as the default session as it would break the auto-login-then-lock configuration...

The gnome-locked-session script might perhaps be tweaked to detect if the session was started automatically but I don't know how... (well, It could simply check the uptime but it won't be very reliable...) Perhaps GDM defines some environment variable that could be used to detect if the session was started automatically ?
